Starting to crochet
Hook size
Start with 4–6 mm. It feels comfortable, works well with thick yarn and lets you see your stitches clearly.
The right yarn
Go for a chunky or thicker yarn in materials that don't split easily. Think acrylic, cotton or a blend.
Learn the basic stitches
With just the chain, the single crochet and the double crochet, you can already make almost anything you'd want!
Start small
Don't start too big. A coaster, scarf or potholder makes a perfect first project.

Beginners are best off starting with a 4 mm to 6 mm crochet hook. These sizes are easy to hold, work nicely with thicker yarn and make it easier to see and learn your stitches!
There are two ways to hold a crochet hook: like a pen or like a knife. Both are perfectly fine: pick the grip that feels most comfortable and lets you crochet evenly.
In crochet, there's no such thing as 'wrong'! If something works well for you, that's always the best way.
Most beginners can learn the basic stitches within a few hours. After a few days of practice the stitches start to feel more natural and you'll be able to finish small projects on your own.
Keep in mind that learning to crochet means learning a whole new skill. Picking up the stitches can go quite quickly, but really mastering them and understanding what you're doing can take weeks.

Stitch markers keep you from losing count. They mark where a round starts, how many stitches you've made or where to increase or decrease. Especially in beginner projects, they keep things clear and prevent mistakes.
