Hi! I'm Diana, guest blogger at Yupa Studio, and in this series I take you into the world of crochet for beginners. When you're just starting out, you mainly want one thing: to find fun, easy crochet projects that give you quick results. Nothing is more motivating than holding something within a few evenings that you can really use, right?
Crochet is relaxing, rhythmic and surprisingly addictive, but you'll discover that soon enough. First let's make sure you have five simple crochet projects you can happily get started with!
So grab a nice cup of tea, curl up on the couch and read along!
Why start with easy crochet projects?
When you're new to crochet, it's tempting to dive straight into an enormous blanket, a gorgeous granny square throw or a cute amigurumi toy. You see them going by on Instagram and think: “I want that too!” But believe me: the most fun and the fastest progress come from small, manageable projects.
With that in mind, let's take a look at five lovely, beginner-proof crochet projects you can work on with relaxation, enjoyment and success.
A crochet scarf (the ultimate beginner classic)
A scarf may well be the loveliest project to start with. You mostly crochet long straight rows, which lets you focus on your stitches, your hook, your yarn tension and your rhythm. No fussing with complicated shapes, just zen back-and-forth crochet.
How long does it take?
A few evenings to a week, depending on how keen you are. It's such a lovely TV project: on the couch, blanket at hand, brain switched off.
Which yarn do you use?
A warm, soft yarn works perfectly, such as Puntarenas or Big Ball. This yarn works up nice and quickly, stays beautiful for a long time and is super warm!
Why this project is so good:
You see your work grow, you find a rhythm quickly and the result is always wearable. A real feel-good project.
A beanie (easier than it looks!)
A beanie might sound like an advanced project, but it really isn't. Often you crochet a straight panel that you simply sew closed at the end and gather at the top. Ta-daa: a beanie! You practice the same stitches as with a scarf, but work towards a clear end result.
How long does it take?
On average one to three evenings. Nice and quick, then.
Material
Wool is naturally the loveliest material for winter projects. It holds warmth excellently and makes your creations feel wonderfully soft and comfortable. Still, wool isn't the ideal choice for everyone. If you're allergic, or you find it hard to crochet with, then acrylic or an acrylic blend is a very suitable alternative.
With acrylic yarn you can still enjoy warm, light and hard-wearing winter creations, without the drawbacks wool sometimes brings.
Why this project is so much fun:
You can show off your work right away. Bonus: everyone will ask you for a beanie afterwards, free ego boost.
Coasters (the perfect mini project for in between)
Coasters are small projects with a big effect. They're ideal for trying out different stitches. On top of that, your first coaster may not be perfect yet, but that doesn't matter, under a mug nobody sees your mistakes anyway ;).
How long does it take?
Half an hour to an hour per coaster.
Material
Cotton works wonderfully here: sturdy, crisp and it holds its shape.
Why this is such a good beginner project:
Quick results, zero stress, endless variation. And let's be honest: everyone has room for them at home.
A potholder (nicely practical and instructive)
A potholder is a lovely project that teaches you how to keep your crochet work straight and even. You very deliberately practice your stitch height and your yarn tension. And if it isn't perfectly straight? It's a potholder, it doesn't have to be perfect!
How long does it take?
An afternoon, or an evening or two.
Material
Thicker cotton is nicest, because it's heat-resistant and sturdy.
Why this is ideal for beginners:
You learn to work neatly and evenly, and you'll notice that in every project that follows.
A crochet headband (trendy, quick and super fun)
A headband is such a satisfying project. Simple, quick and modern, and a fantastic gift idea on top of that. Often you just crochet a straight strip that you finish with a fun twist. The end result is stylish, warm and functional.
How long does it take?
This can certainly be done in an evening (or as long as you like if you take it easy).
Material
A soft, supple yarn that doesn't itch. Acrylic, a merino blend or a cotton blend are great.
Why this project is brilliant:
In no time you have a wearable item you can be proud of, and that gets addictive.
Finally: you can do this
If you take one thing away from this blog, let it be this: start small, be patient and enjoy the process. You really don't have to crochet perfectly straight away. Every stitch you make makes you better, and with these easy crochet projects you build confidence step by step.
