If you've never crocheted before, getting started can seem complicated. But don't worry! Crochet really isn't difficult, and there are plenty of easy projects for beginners. In this blog I'll share some handy tips.

Crochet is a wonderful hobby that's both relaxing and creative. Before you start, there are a few basics to get the hang of.
Most crochet patterns begin with a slip knot, after which you work a series of chains to create a foundation for your project. From there you can use different stitches to shape and change your work. Crochet lets your creativity run free, but if you prefer to follow a pattern, that works just as well.
Before we get to the projects, here are a few tips to help you prepare for your first stitches:
- Start with the right materials. As a beginner, all you need is a crochet hook and some yarn. Invest in good materials and don't go for ‘cheap’. That makes crocheting a lot harder and the result won't look as nice (a few euros more already gets you decent quality)! Choose a 4 mm or 5 mm crochet hook and a yarn that isn't too thin. The yarn label usually tells you which hook size you need.
- Practice the basic stitches first – before you take on whole projects. The most important ones to learn are the chain, the single crochet and the double crochet. On my YouTube channel you'll find videos that walk you through these stitches step by step.
- Be patient! Crochet can be a little frustrating at first, but practice makes perfect. Take your time, pick your work up regularly and you'll soon notice it getting easier.

Scarf
A scarf is a great beginner project, because it's an easy way to practice the basic stitches. The simplest scarf takes nothing more than a foundation chain and double crochet stitches. Chain as wide as you want your scarf to be, then work double crochet until it reaches the length you like. Want to finish faster and end up with a nice thick scarf? Go for chunky yarn and a large hook. A lovely project for yourself, and a great gift too.
Potholder
A potholder is another great beginner project. Start by working a number of chains, then work single crochet until you have a square big enough to hold a pan. Add a lining if you'd like extra warmth and protection.
Granny Square
Another simple but really fun beginner project is the granny square. It's a small square made up of several rounds of easy stitches. You can use granny squares to make blankets, cushions, bags and much more. Start by learning the basic granny square technique, then try out different color combinations and patterns to give your square its own look.
Amigurumi
Amigurumi are crocheted stuffed toys. They're perfect for beginners because they're made up of simple shapes and don't need many different stitches. Amigurumi is usually worked in single crochet. There are plenty of amigurumi patterns available online, from cute animals to cartoon characters.
Baby blanket
A baby blanket is a beautiful, simple project to make as a gift for a newborn. It's made up of repeating stitch patterns and can be worked in any color or shape.
